Impact of the Language Policy of English Medium Elite Schools of Gujrat, Pakistan on the Language Practices of their Students

In Pakistan, people can often speak three languages (Urdu, English, and a regional language). The de jure policy of the country encourages vernacular languages, but facto use English Urdu. No attention is paid towards especially Punjabi. Elite schools serve as instruments for promotion English. For this reason, Urdu Punjabi are ignored by these schools. Consequently, young generation no more interested in speaking languages. Keeping view situation,the current research investigates how national language being interpreted elite regarding non-use language(s) educational settings. It also pays effect school on linguistic choices stakeholders. purpose, data was collected from branches two (Beacon House Lahore Grammar Schools) operating Gujrat. study adopted mixed method (qualitative andquantitative) approach collection. qualitative collection an interview protocol developed while quantitative (principals, teachers, students, parents) through questionnaire. responses to questionnaire were analyzed descriptively Statistical Package Social Sciences, analysis applied interviews. findings revealed that have their own policies. These pay heed government policy. This indicates plays significant role subtractive bilingualism. Due only policy, students not mother andnational Furthermore, theselanguages identity markers students; however, practice they feel ashamed languages.
